COMMUNITY IMPACT

Doc and Gayle Young Fall Food Drive

For 30 years, the Doc & Gayle Young Food Drive has raised money to purchase food packs, which are distributed by volunteers to needy families on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving. The families receiving food packs are selected by the Austin Housing Authority and the Texas Department of Protective and Regulatory Services.

Each food pack contains enough food to feed a family of five a full traditional Thanksgiving dinner, including a 10-pound turkey, plus additional food to feed the family for three to five days thereafter. Since the food is provided to the families in food packs rather than as prepared food, they are able to enjoy it in the comfort and dignity of their own homes. In recent years, the Food Drive provided food packs to over 1,300 families in the greater Austin area each year.

UCS and its employees have raised over $20,000 for the Food Drive, and the company matches all employee donations dollar-for-dollar.

Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation

UCS is a proud supporter the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF).  JDRF is the leading global organization focused on type 1 diabetes (T1D) research. Driven by passionate, grassroots volunteers connected to children, adolescents, and adults with this disease, JDRF is now the largest charitable supporter of T1D research. The goal of JDRF research is to improve the lives of all people affected by T1D by accelerating progress on the most promising opportunities for curing, better treating, and preventing T1D. JDRF collaborates with a wide spectrum of partners who share this goal.

Since its founding in 1970, JDRF has awarded more than $1.7 billion to diabetes research. Past JDRF efforts have helped to significantly advance the care of people with this disease, and have expanded the critical scientific understanding of T1D. JDRF will not rest until T1D is fully conquered. More than 80 percent of JDRF’s expenditures directly support research and research-related education.

UCS sponsors a corporate team at the annual JDRF Walk to Cure Diabetes, and the company matches all employee donations dollar-for-dollar.
